No such thing as bad weather

Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.

The rhythm of winter farming is much different from that of the warmer months. December and January allow for a time of rest, planning, and reflection on the past growing season. It also allow for a time to talk to reporters about winter farming.

This week has been cold, with a windchill this morning of minus 13. One way this cold in beneficial to the farm is that it kills populations of insect pests around the farm. Aphid populations have built up  in the hoophouses the past two years. This weeks cold should knock their populations back and make tomato plants and greens happy come spring.

    Hi Daniel,

It’s great to see a new update and I look forward to many more this year.

I am working on creating case studies on exemplar urban agriculture and would like to document The Farm St. Joe’s. It would be great to talk to you or someone else at the farm regarding more information.

    My contact is philiphan@me.com

    Best,
